Massachusetts GED Information

GED Requirements Massachusetts

1. Title of State Credential: Massachusetts State High School Equivalency Diploma.
2. Requirements for Issuance of Diploma:

Residence: Applicant must be a resident of Massachusetts; last attended secondary school in Massachusetts; or proof of continued residence in Massachusetts while in the U. S. Armed Forces.

Age: 18 with no qualifications; however, if 16 or 17, the applicant must have "official letter of withdrawal" from their last school of attendance on file at test center.

School Status: Individual may not be enrolled in any elementary or secondary school program or have received a diploma or certificate indicating having received a high school credential.

 Fees:

$65 payable at the time of registration. The cost for retesting is $15.00 per individual test section.


Verifying a GED Obtaining Verification on Your GED.  In Massachusetts there are two ways to verify your GED, Letter of Certification and Simple Verification.

Letter of Certification

This is the procedure to follow to obtain verification that you have received a Massachusetts High School Equivalency Diploma (GED): (Massachusetts does not issue duplicate diplomas or copies of GEDs) Please note in Massachusetts GED Transcripts do not indicate receiving a GED certificate/diploma only that the five tests were taken and passed. You must obtain the "Letter of Certification" for verification of your GED status if you no longer have your actual GED certificate/diploma.

1.Send a letter of request including all this information -
  •  Name tested under,
  •  SSN,
  •  Date of birth,
  •  Where tested,
  •  Approximate date tested.
2. Include a $2 money order (no cash or personal checks!) made out to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (there is a $2 charge for each Letter of Certification)

3. Put your current address and telephone number

4. If you want the Letter of Certification sent to somewhere other then your address - include that address also - be a specific as possible especially in regards to colleges.

5. Sign the request and send it to the following address:

Procedure for Simple Verification

Request from employers, employment agencies, schools, Dept. of Corrections and others that do not need written/formal documentation can fax the form Simple Verification of GED for verification purposes.
